Press Release

A dozen artists will be opening their studies at St Michael’s Studios in Bridport’s Art & Vintage Quarter from 10am to 4pm over the four days of the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend - Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday and the Bank Holiday Monday. Original works will be available, as well as prints, ceramics, photographs, books and cards.

Artists Kit Glaisyer, Caroline Ireland, David Brooke, Charlotte Miller, Marion Taylor, Peggy Cozzi, Russ Snedker, Jemma Thompson, Squirrell Bindery & Press, Fi Neylan Hats plus Studio in the Attic with Sally Davies, Elizabeth Sporne and Neil Barnes will all be open at various times over the weekend.

Kit Glaisyer has returned from his year-long residency in Bath and will be unveiling his latest painting commission “A view across a Devon valley”. The painting was over a year in the making, inspired by an autumnal view across the Offwell Vallery in East Devon, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Caroline Ireland creates images that emerge from intuitive processes, suggesting glimpses of real and imagined worlds; images come from dreams and her imagination in soft pastels, watercolours and charcoal. She also works from observation in pastel on black paper, with strong, bright and vibrant colours.

David Brook is well known for his distinctive, meticulously crafted, imaginative acrylic paintings and coloured pencil drawings. Influences of mythology and medieval book illumination are woven together to create an original contemporary mixture of style and subject.

Marion Taylor creates landscape paintings of Dorset rich in pattern and colour, including depictions of the much-loved local landmark, Colmer’s Hill.  Enjoy paintings of still life, butterflies and flowers. Signed copies of Marion’s book – “Colmer’s Hill, one artist’s obsession” will also be available.

Charlotte Miller creates mixed media semi-abstract paintings on canvas and smaller works on paper. She is inspired by the hidden raw landscape of West Dorset and walks along local coastal paths.

Russ Snedker has returned to Bridport from Dubai after an international career in art and photography. He makes fine line works in ink and graphite, both subtle and stylised. His sculptures are dynamic and evocative, while his paintings of sea scenes have boldness and strength.

Peggy Cozzi has been working at St Michaels Studios since last November and has recently completed a series of abstract paintings that are on display at the Mall Galleries, London. On Saturday she will be opening her studio to show her paintings, drawings and prints based on the human form and abstract compositions.

Sally Davies uses her imagination to evoke her love of nature, flowers and the great outdoors in both her fresh colour work and striking black and white imagery. She works exclusively with her own photographs, which she multiplies, sometimes adding paint or other media.

Elizabeth Sporne paints in bold acrylic on canvas, creating strong portraits that capture both likeness and character.

Neil Barnes has nearly 40 years’ experience as a professional photographer, with a myriad of people and objects passing through his lens. Latterly he has turned to landscape photography and his experience shows in the exceptionally high standard of his work, earning him an excellent reputation in this field.

Fi Neylan will be showing a collection of individual, handmade and designer Hats and headwear for everyday and special occasions, with various accessories to complement, along with a collection of drawings and paintings by herself and a selection of local artists.

Jemma Thompson is a well-known sign painter in Bridport and will be showing a selection of her calligraphy along with her current animal portrait commissions.

Squirrell Bindery & Press is run by musician-bookbinder David Squirrell and artist-poet Kim O'Loughlin, with a treasure trove of fine stationery, handbound notebooks and sketchbooks in traditional styles and some new ones, plus a range of handprinted greetings cards and original block prints. Ask about bespoke binding and printing, business cards, wedding stationery and their beautiful custom books.
